Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax system implemented in India to replace multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. It simplifies taxation by creating a single national market and is applicable to businesses involved in the supply of goods and services.

    • Implemented on 1st July 2017
    • Operates under the “One Nation, One Tax” principle
    • Collected at multiple stages but with seamless input tax credit

✅ Eliminates Multiple Taxes – Replaces indirect taxes like VAT, Excise, Service Tax, etc.
✅ Reduces Cascading Effect – Input tax credit ensures tax is levied only on value addition.
✅ Enhances Business Compliance – Centralized registration and online processes simplify compliance.
✅ Boosts Ease of Doing Business – Transparent system improves trade across states.
✅ Promotes Economic Growth – Encourages a structured tax system and reduces tax evasion.
✅ Uniform Tax Structure – Applicable across all states, reducing tax disparities

GST is categorized into four types based on transaction type and jurisdiction:

🔹 CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) – Levied by the Central Government on intra-state sales.
🔹 SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) – Levied by the State Government on intra-state sales.
🔹 IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax) – Applied on inter-state transactions and imports, collected by the Central Government and distributed among states.
🔹 UTGST (Union Territory Goods and Services Tax) – Levied in Union Territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.
